After We're Gone cover

After We're Gone: A Christian Perspective on Estate and Life Planning for Families that Include a Dependent Member with a Disability 3d print edition published July 2011. Also available from Amazon.com.

Caring for an adult who is dependent due to a significant disability is a major responsibility. Making provisions for that person's physical, emotional, and financial well-being after the death of the caregiver can be complex and confusing. After We're Gone introduces options and resources for the Christian family and faith community as they interact with the legal system to make provisions for the ongoing care of loved ones with disabilities. The Christian Leader excerpted the book in its Oct-Nov 2012 online edition at http://www.usmb.org/planning-for-a-disabled-childs-adult-life.

"This book is an extended hand, reaching out to those who are worried or frustrated to offer encouragement, support, and hope."

Wilfred Martens, PhD
Professor Emeritus of English, Fresno Pacific University
Founding member of California Mennonite Residential Services

Praeger Handbook of Victimology coverArticles "Alternative dispute resolution" and "Mediation" in Janet K. Wilson, ed. Praeger Handbook of Victimology. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO, LLP, 2009. Available through Amazon.com.

Publisher's notes: The Praeger Handbook of Victimology is the first full-scale reference to encompass the full scope of the discipline of victim studies, marking its evolution from an initial focus on homicide, child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence to a more wide-ranging modern interpretation that includes hate crimes, terrorism, and cyber crimes such as online bullying, stalking, and identity theft.

The Praeger Handbook of Victimology offers an up-to-date portrait of its field, including the latest research from criminal justice studies, feminist studies, and other disciplines, as well as the changing views of the victim from law enforcement and the public at large. The nearly 200 alphabetically organized entries cover everything from terminology unique to the field to victimizations relative to specific crimes to the extension of crime victim rights and victim interactions with the criminal justice system. Victims' advocates, legal professionals, students, researchers, or anyone fascinated by the impact of crime on society will find this a uniquely informative resource.

Title Features:

  • Includes nearly 200 entries on the development and scope of the 70-year-old field of victimology

Controversies in Victimology 2d cover"Victim-Offender Programs in Correctional Settings: Can They Effectively Bridge Divergent Perspectives?" With Mario Thomas Gaboury in Laura J. Moriarty (Ed.), (2008) Controversies in Victimology, 2nd Edition. Cincinnati, OH: Anderson Publishing Company.

Publisher's notes: Controversies in Victimology features original works of noted scholars and practitioners with the focus on controversial issues in victimology. This second edition aims to shed light on the debates over, the media attention on, and the psychology behind victimization. Because agents for both the victim and the offender need to work together to make the criminal justice system operate more efficiently and effectively, this book discusses the controversies from all sides of the debate, and attempts to reconcile the issues in order to move the field forward. Eleven articles cover the topics of balancing victim/offender rights, victim blaming, same-sex intimate partner violence, mass media and victims of rape, examination of whether victims should have the right to meet with their offenders, fear of crime and victimization, stalking and cyberstalking, victim impact statements, victim-offender programs in correctional settings, and female sex offenders. The book concludes with a chapter that proposes ways to reconcile the controversies.

Current Issues in Victimology Research, 2d ed. cover"Corrections-Based Victim Service and Restorative Justice Programs" book chapter with Mario Gaboury, President of the American Society of Victimology, in Moriarty, Laura J. and Jerin, Robert A. (2007) Current Issues in Victimology Research, 2d ed., Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, pp. 289-308.

Publisher's notes: This new edition updates and expands the first edition. Research on crime victims' issues is a relatively new phenomenon in the criminal justice field. With the birth of victimology in the late 1940s and early 1950s, research focused on victim-offender relationships and victim culpability. It has only been in the last few decades that researchers have both studied the effects of crime upon the victim and analyzed the services provided to the crime victim. Moriarty and Jerin provide an understanding of the impact of the criminal act upon individuals and society through recent research. The book provides the criminal justice field with a foundation for grasping the complexities of crime victimization. Current Issues in Victimology Research is a collection of sixteen original articles written by criminal justice academics and practitioners. The book is arranged into sections including fear of crime, campus victimization, victim services and representation, victims' rights versus offenders' rights, and sexual harassment and stalking. Unlike most other victimology books, which are written as textbooks, this book is a volume of the most recent research, conducted by academic scholars in the field, focusing on current issues in victimology.

Anabaptists Are Back cover The Anabaptists are Back: Making Peace in a Dangerous World. Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1991. ISBN 0-8361-3552-0. Available through MennoLink Books or Amazon.com. Mennolink says: "Here are stories of Christians who put their lives on the line to share their beliefs as members of Christian Peacemaker Teams. Duane Ruth-Heffelbower points out that Jesus said 'Blessed are the peacemakers.' He did not say 'Blessed are the peace lovers.' We have not always seen the difference. Active peacemaking requires entering the heart of conflict. It may sometimes look more like troublemaking than peacemaking. That is a risk people take when they try to live out Jesus' call to peacemaking."
Christian and Jury Duty cover The Christian and Jury Duty. Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1991. ISBN 0-8361-3562-8. Available through Amazon.com and Mennolink Books. Mennolink says: "Can you be a good Christian and a good juror? As a Christian, you believe Christians should obey government when appropriate. You also believe God's law is above human law--and Christians must resist some forms of involvement in government. This book does not give one right answer. But by taking a close look at the legal system, the Bible, and Christian tradition, Duane Ruth-Heffelbower helps potential Christian jurors make an informed choice."
